About the event

About The History of Gunpowder:
The History of Gunpowder is a Vancouver-based experimental freakout orchestra built on tension, release, and controlled chaos. Their sound moves between growling blues vocals, expansive arrangements, and danceable funk rhythms — a delicate balance where groove and disorder coexist. Anchored by a powerful horn section alongside violin and pedal steel, every performance feels unpredictable, physical, and fully alive.
The eight-piece ensemble has released four studio albums and is currently completing their fifth LP, The Epileptic Vol II. Known for pushing beyond conventional band formats, their recent project Swallows captured the group live in a historic church, blending pipe organ, choral vocals, loops, and drones into an experience that was both intimate and massive. Drawing from blues, soul, jazz, funk, and punk, their music stretches traditional forms while staying rooted in rhythm and movement.
A staple of the Canadian live scene with deep ties to circus and burlesque communities, The History of Gunpowder has built a devoted following through fearless live performances across Canada and Europe. Their shows are communal and visceral — moments where structure dissolves, the room ignites, and chaos becomes the point.

About The Shelf Concert:
Inspired by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, we bring raw, stripped-down performances to Vancouver — but with our own after-hours twist. On Wednesday nights, Hestia closes its doors to the public and transforms into a private listening room for just 60 guests. No blasting speakers, no artificial mixing — just pure, direct sound. Artists self-mix in the moment, adjusting to the space and the energy of the room. And since each concert is recorded live, the audience isn’t just watching — they’re part of the final cut. Every cheer, clap, and moment of silence is captured by the microphones forever.
Your ticket includes:
✔️ Exclusive access to the session — An intimate, after-hours concert in the closed restaurant space at Hestia.
✔️ A late-night buffet — Curated by HESTIA to make the night feel even more special.
✔️ A role in the recording – Your energy, your reactions, your moment.
How It Works
The concert is structured into three short sets (three songs each), with two 5-minute breaks in between.
Natural emotional reactions (clapping, cheering, vibing, etc.) are encouraged!
During performances, we ask for minimal disruptive noise — think of it like being in a live recording session. Because it is!
Breaks are off the record — the perfect time to chat, enjoy the buffet, or grab another drink.
Some artists may extend their set or play an encore if the vibe feels right — show your love and you might just get more!
Limited to 60 spots. Every session is unique and will not appear again.
